Upcoming Deadlines: What to Know Before Fall

A Busy Filing Season Is Ahead

Several important tax filing dates are coming up this fall. For taxpayers and organizations with returns currently on extension, knowing the applicable filing date and gathering any remaining information early can help avoid a last-minute rush.

Below are some of the most common upcoming deadlines, along with a few important reminders. For RLA clients, we have also included when we need outstanding information to help ensure timely filing.

September 15: Partnerships & S Corporations

The extended filing deadline for calendar-year:

  • Form 1065 – Partnerships
  • Form 1120-S – S Corporations

September 15 is also the third-quarter estimated tax payment date for many taxpayers.

If your return is on extension, make sure your tax professional has the information needed to complete the return.

September 30: Trusts & Estates

September 30 is the extended filing deadline for many calendar-year Form 1041 trust and estate income tax returns.

If you are still gathering information for a return due September 30, now is the time to make sure any outstanding items are provided to your tax professional.

October 15: Individuals & C Corporations

An extension gives you additional time to file your return, but it does not extend the original deadline to pay any tax that may be due. Taxes paid after the original due date may be subject to interest and penalties, even when the return itself was properly extended.

November 16: Nonprofits & Tax-Exempt Organizations

November 16 is the extended filing deadline for many calendar-year Form 990 series returns in 2026.

Organizations with a fiscal year-end may have a different filing date.

Not Sure What We Still Need?

If a tax professional is preparing your return, you may not need to figure out what is missing on your own. Check any outstanding requests or follow up with your preparer to confirm whether your file is complete.

Providing complete information early gives your tax professional time to prepare the return, review the information provided, work through questions, and address any unexpected issues before the filing date.

A Reminder for RLA Clients

If RLA is preparing your extended return, please respond to any outstanding requests from our team as soon as possible.

For returns due October 15 or later, please have all requested information to RLA by September 30 to help ensure timely filing.

If you are unsure whether your file is complete, reach out to our team and we can help confirm what is still needed.

You can access your online client portal here.
